Water and Its Forms
We will be discussing water this week- the water cycle as well as forms of matter and how we can both identify and change water's form. Water is unique to Earth (as of today but science is making new discoveries every day) and is a unique element in and of itself.
*In fact- a new water planet was just discovered by scientists that is remarkably similar to Earth but millions of miles away. So that last sentence should read "Water is unique to Earth in this solar system" though that can also change very soon.
Water is special because it can be three forms and still be considered the same basic element.

Experiments we will do:
Tuesday-
1) Put hot water n a clear glass with a lid (pickling jars work very well) then add ice cubes and place the lid on. Given time the ice cubes will melt and water will be on the lid inside the jar. Discuss how the water moved (went from gas to solid again).
Thursday-
1) Put ice in a cup and lay string over the ice cube. Then sprinkle salt over the cube, after a few minutes you can then pick up the cube by grabbing the string. This is because as the ice melted it refroze around the string from the lowered temperature of adding salt.
2) Put a dot of color (marker, secondary color or black works well) on a strip porous paper about a half inch from the end and a couple inches below the top (paper towel or coffee filter works best). Place the strip of paper bottom tip in water (do not touch the color dot to the water) and hang the strip from a pencil at the top. Watch the water climb the strip and pull apart the colors in the ink of the dot.
3) Take a cup of water and try to float a paperclip. Because of water tension if you carefully lay the paperclip on a strip of paper towel (gently parallel to the water) the clip will float on the water surface. We see this in everyday life in leaves that float on the pool surface and many other instances.
